Video Game Review: RAGE

Merry Christmas to me, I received a couple of the most hyped games of the past year for Christmas and they didn’t disappoint. My only problem now is finding time to play all of them while still maintaining a full time job and marriage. The First of these games I will review is RAGE.

Rage was hyped for a long time before it came out and unfortunately kinda faded away after its release, (thanks in part to COD:MW3 and Battlefield 3). From the creators of other one named classics such as DOOM and QUAKE, iD Software took their first person shooter base and turned it into a grandiose rpg. The best way to describe RAGE would be to imagine the offspring created from a brutal rape of Fallout3 by Borderlands. The First person shooter controls are almost identical to Fallout with a few tweaks here and there, while adding the third person vehicle play of Borderlands. However unlike Borderlands you are able to customize and upgrade your vehicle with different weapons, drive-trains, and engines, so that you can decide how you deal with the outlandish Mad Max type wasteland gangs. GOW3: Raam’s Shadow DLC now Available

RAAM’s Shadow is the third installment of downloadable content for Gears of War 3. The pack was released yesterday for 1200 Microsoft Points; if the Gears of War 3 Season Pass has been purchased, RAAM’s Shadow can be downloaded automatically. The pack features a three-hour campaign set prior to the original Gears of War events post-Emergence Day, as Zeta Squad is enlisted to evacuate Ilima City and protect the citizens against a Locust Kryll storm. Zeta Squad consists of fan favorites(Michael Barrick, Minh Young Kim, Tai Kaliso, and Alicia Valera who (with exception of Alicia) are fan favorites from throughout the franchise and can now all be used in multiplayer venues.

“RAAM’s Shadow drops players into taking on the infamous Locust leader from Gears 1, General RAAM and in addition (taking a bit from HALO 2 )you not only control the Gears, but alternately control General Raam in pursuit of taking the city down. As you know RAAM’s is surrounded by an aura of Kryll which acts as a shield for common bullets that is only vulnerable to explosives and fire. RAAM can control a column of Kryll at targets, which rips them apart like flying piranha. RAAM uses his massive sword in close-quarters combat; he can either swipe it like the Cleaver or charge/impale enemies Retro-Lancer style. RAAM can also perform executions on downed COG by picking them up by the head and decapitating the target. View full article »

My Xbox Live app for iPhone

This week Microsoft launched its most impressive and streamlined Xbox Live system to date, finally bringing the original vision of the Xbox experience into view. The update includes full Kinect compatibility and a redesign that mimics the new Windows 8 tile based operating system. Many may have already experienced this OS on the Windows 7 phone or first with the Zune (R.I.P). In the future as the newest Microsoft products come out it seems as if they are finally cleaning up the edges and forming a streamlined integrated social experience that can seamlessly interact in the cloud between all devices with one functional operating system.
Along with this redesign of style and substance Xbox live branches out to apple products with the MY XBOX LIVE app which allows you to access and edit your live features on the go without having to have a Windows 7 phone. Now you cant play your live games via this app but it cant be far off in my opinion. Upon Starting the app you sign in with your ID and you are brought to the mobile version of your live homepage. As you can see it is almost identical in style and function to your home live page. You are able to watch all the same featurettes in the spotlight, check your mail, and edit your settings all from this mobile homepage. View full article »

The Internet is undoubtedly a daily assault on the senses.  Every day one jacks in to the Matrix, one is awash in tweets, status updates, and YouTube videos of random people getting jacked in the groin.

It’s a beautiful thing.

For those of you who quite simply just need MORE from the Internet; welcome Olly.  Olly is an open source stink-bot, as gathered from the product website.  Completely open, programmers can tweak Olly to… emit.. a smelly alert triggered by social media events.  Someone likes your page?  Olly lets your nose know.  New tweet?  *sniff sniff*… yup!  Oh the possibilities are endless.  The concept seems pretty straightforward, you can load up Olly with oils, objects, fruit, pretty much anything Olly - your personal smellbot!that will fit and has an odor.  After that, you just tie it to an event to get it to “fire” when said event occurs.

While I enjoy any device with this much technology paired with pointlessness – I can only imagine how annoying this could rapidly become.  A device like this begs for an entirely new black-hat attack: let’s call it a SOL (Sensory OverLoad) attack.  Step one, you load up Olly with some peppermint oil.  Step two, you tie Olly to “toot” when you’re tagged on Twitter.  Step three, imagine the mayhem when one of your less-than-awesome friends decides to spam your Twitter feed only for you to return to your office which now smells like a candy-cane orgy.  Madness, I tell you.

These are not available yet, so no review for you (unfortunately).  I’m going to keep my eyes open, however, and I’ll review one if I get my hands on an Olly before I’m distracted by something shiny and new.  I’m a chimp, after all.

For those of you who may also want to hop this train, check it out:

GOW3 = Top Banana

WOW. Epic has outdone themselves on this one. Gears of War 3 is so well done that it makes Gears of War 2 look like Rush’N Attack on the original NES. Packed with so many new features it’s hard to figure out where to begin. Lets start out simply with the Campaign mode; there are now two different choices, Story Mode and Arcade mode. Story mode is what you’re used to where you play through the final chapter of the gears trilogy with a longer, more engaging and truly exceptional plot. In fact the story is the best in the trilogy and a fitting end to the series. Arcade mode adds some flavor to the campaign mode by adding what they call mutaters. Mutaters are essentially modifiers very similar to the cheats in the original Goldeneye64 , where you can add fun things like big head mode, headless chicken mode, and enemy regeneration. This adds hours of fun to the campaign making it incredibly repayable. In addition these mutators can be added to the celebrated Horde mode as well. View full article »

With all the hype leading up to the release of Dead Island, One would assume that it would be a game changer in the genre. Unfortunately it is not; However….It is a REALLY fun attempt. Basically take the play control and Melee style combat from BIOSHOCK (As well as the beautifully rendered environments) mix in the RPG aspects of BORDERLANDS and the mission variety of Dead Rising and you get Dead Island. It seems that the creators took handfuls of great features from other successful franchises and crammed them into a chimera of awesomeness. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not the greatest game ever created but it is the most fun you can have smashing in zombie’s heads since Dead Rising. Plus the Multi-Player function is INCREDIBLY well done so you can roam the island with 3 of your friends. View full article »

Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet

The Intuos4 is a black on black marvel of digital drawing tablets. Slimmer than the previous generation, with 16:9 aspect active tablet areas, eight dynamically labeled programmable Express Keys (buttons), and a four-function programmable  Touch Dial. This comes in handy especially when concerning cut and paste operations and speeding up tiresome shortcuts into macro buttons. Also the pen has a more responsive tip sensor and supports 2,048 levels of sensitivity not to mention the response curve has increased sensitivity at lighter pressures for a more fluid feel overall.

But who cares about the technical aspects…how does it make your work look? GREAT! As with all tablets there is still a disconnect when used for actual drawing purposes, however when used for Photoshop and digital painting the capabilities are limitless. With the improved control panel you have instant control over your brush size and shape, cut, paste, zoom, orientation and literally hundreds of other macro key combinations. The panel itself has LED labels that remind you of each buttons macro programming which make it easy to remember a constantly changing repertoire of changing themes. Everything is adjustable, and can be customized to any digital artists need. View full article »

Review: iRobot Scooba 230

A closeup of the iRobot Roomba 230

Below is a first-look at the  Scooba 230 from iRobot.  In the interest of full disclosure, I feel it’s important to state up front that I’m an iRobot fan.  It’s true; ever since my first Roomba has been vacuuming for me, I’ve been a fan of the company that lets me get household cleaning done while I grind away on other chores or irresponsible activities.  Read the following with that in mind.

The Scooba 230, for the uninitiated, is iRobot’s newest “mopping” robot, which is designed to clean tile floors, as well as sealed hardwood.  This latest model either replaces or compliments the original mopping robot, the Scooba 300 series. My first impression of the 230 was sheer amazement at the size of the box on my front stoop.  For those that own any of the original Roombas or Scoobas, you know that the robot is usually the size of a pair of Chicago deep dish pizzas stacked on top of one another. The Scooba 230 has a much smaller circumference, but a tiny bit taller.  Think three personal pan pizzas stacked up one on top of the other.  Of course, I’ve included several photos that show the size difference of the two models and as usual I threw in a delicious point-of-reference.

Review: Boxee Box by DLink

The latest Internet video-consumption device to be placed under the Chimp’s microscope is the Boxee Box by D-Link.  Straight out of the box, the Box has a very unique look.  Imagine a cube carved out of soft clay.  Pick up said imaginary cube then imagine yourself launching it, corner-first, at the hard ground in a fit of rage.  You now have a basic idea of the external aesthetic of the box.

After years of EXTREMELY poor marketing Microsoft has pulled the plug on the ZUNE player. I have sung the praises of the player to no avail for years and it seems that it was a product that was just given up on. Honestly can you tell me the last time you saw a Zune commercial?

Microsoft stated that the Zune service would remain and continue to grow, and the existing models of the player would still be sold, but no new hardware development would be undertaken. I’m glad that the service will still remain because the Zune Marketplace is much more intuitive, informative…and just has a better looking GUI than iTunes. That’s not even mentioning the fact that you’re able to play Xbox Live games right on the Zune HD itself from anywhere you want!

The informed consumer would assume that Zune development has been rolled into the Windows phone 7 {as the Zune service is built in} but honestly, one has to wonder how long it is before they give up on that product. Windows Phone 7 (which should have been the Zune Phone) IS in fact a ZUNE HD unit that has phone and messaging capability and that’s really it. If they have faith in the Phone why not the Media player version…it makes no sense. It seems to me that Microsoft has become the marketing equivalent of a ten year old learning an instrument; If they’re not good at it they slowly start to stop paying attention and give up.
